80s Bands Author: Greg Loucks
Hits: 18

The 1980s saw an explosion of musical creativity that reshaped the global soundscape, driven in large part by the rise of synthesizers, music television, and genre-blending experimentation. Bands like Duran Duran, Tears for Fears, and Depeche Mode helped define the era’s polished, atmospheric sound, combining electronic instrumentation with emotionally resonant lyrics. The launch of MTV in 1981 further amplified their influence, turning music videos into a powerful artistic and promotional medium. Meanwhile, bands such as The Police and U2 blended rock with reggae and post-punk elements, achieving massive global success while maintaining distinct sonic identities.

Alongside mainstream success, alternative and underground scenes flourished. Groups like The Cure and Echo & the Bunnymen cultivated darker, more introspective sounds that would later influence generations of indie and alternative artists. At the heavier end, bands such as Metallica and Iron Maiden helped bring heavy metal into the mainstream, while acts like Van Halen and Bon Jovi dominated arena rock with anthemic hits. Across genres—from synth-pop and new wave to hard rock and metal—the bands of the 1980s left a lasting cultural imprint, shaping not only the sound of the decade but the future direction of popular music worldwide.

Africa is the world's second-largest and second-most populous continent after Asia. At about 30.3 million km2 (11.7 million square miles) including adjacent islands, it covers around 20% of Earth's land area and 6% of its total surface area. With nearly 1.4 billion people as of 2021, it accounts for about 18% of the world's human population. Africa's population is the youngest among all the continents; the median age in 2012 was 19.7, when the worldwide median age was 30.4. Based on 2024 projections, Africa's population will exceed 3.8 billion people by 2100. Africa is the least wealthy inhabited continent per capita and second-least wealthy by total wealth, ahead of Oceania. Scholars have attributed this to different factors including geography, climate, corruption, colonialism, the Cold War, and neocolonialism. Despite this low concentration of wealth, recent economic expansion and a large and young population make Africa an important economic market in the broader global context, and Africa has a large quantity of natural resources.

Alberta is a province in Canada. It is a part of Western Canada and is one of the three prairie provinces. Alberta is bordered by British Columbia to its west, Saskatchewan to its east, the Northwest Territories to its north, and the U.S. state of Montana to its south. Alberta is the fourth-largest province by area, at 661,848 square kilometres (255,541 square miles), and the fourth-most populous, with 4,262,635 residents. Alberta's capital is Edmonton; its largest city is Calgary. The two cities are Alberta's largest census metropolitan areas. More than half of Albertans live in Edmonton or Calgary, which encourages a continuing rivalry between the two cities. English is the province's official language.
