Juan Fernández Islands
Juan Fernández Islands
Also known as: Islas Juan Fernández (Spanish), Juan Fernández Archipelago, Archipiélago Juan Fernández (Spanish)
The Juan Fernández Islands are a Chilean archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean characterized by rugged volcanic mountains, steep coastal cliffs, and subtropical forests.
📍 Juan Fernández Islands are a small group of islands located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, about 670 km (420 miles) west of Chile, to which they belong as part of the Valparaíso Region. The archipelago consists mainly of three islands—Robinson Crusoe Island, Alejandro Selkirk Island, and Santa Clara Island—and has no land borders, being surrounded entirely by the Pacific Ocean.
The Juan Fernández Islands’ geography is defined by rugged, volcanic terrain with steep mountains, deep valleys, and dramatic coastal cliffs. The total land area is about 100 square kilometers (39 square miles), with most of the population living on Robinson Crusoe Island. The islands feature a mix of lush vegetation, including forests and endemic plant species, supported by a mild oceanic climate. Their isolation has led to unique ecosystems and high levels of biodiversity. The archipelago’s natural environment and scientific importance have contributed to its designation as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, and it plays a role in conservation, fishing, and limited tourism.
