The Plazas de soberanía are a group of small Spanish territories on the northern coast of Africa characterized by rocky islets, coastal cliffs, and Mediterranean shorelines along the Strait of Gibraltar.

📍 Plazas de soberanía are a group of small Spanish territories located along the northern coast of Africa, scattered along the Mediterranean coastline of Morocco. They consist of several uninhabited or sparsely populated islands, islets, and coastal enclaves, separate from the larger Spanish cities of Ceuta and Melilla, with no significant land borders except for a few tiny enclaves.
The Plazas de soberanía’s geography is characterized by very small, rocky landforms, including islands such as the Chafarinas Islands, Peñón de Alhucemas, and Peñón de Vélez de la Gomera. Their total land area is extremely limited, and most consist of steep cliffs, rocky shores, and minimal vegetation. These territories are strategically located along the Mediterranean coast and are primarily used for military and administrative purposes. Their position at the crossroads between Europe and Africa has shaped their importance in maritime control, security, and regional geopolitics.
