Réunion
Réunion
Historically known as: Île Bourbon (before 1848)
Also known as: La Réunion (French), La Rényon (Réunion Creole French)
Réunion is a French overseas department in the Indian Ocean characterized by volcanic mountains, deep valleys, tropical forests, and rugged coastlines.
📍 Réunion is an overseas department and region of France located in the Indian Ocean, east of Madagascar and southwest of Mauritius. It is part of the Mascarene Islands and has no land borders, being surrounded entirely by the Indian Ocean.
Réunion’s geography is defined by its volcanic origin, featuring rugged mountains, deep valleys, and dramatic landscapes within an area of about 2,512 square kilometers (970 square miles). The island is dominated by two major volcanic massifs, including the active Piton de la Fournaise, one of the most active volcanoes in the world, and the extinct Piton des Neiges. Its terrain includes steep cliffs, cirques, and lush tropical vegetation, supported by a humid climate. The coastline is mostly rocky with some beaches and coral reef areas. Réunion’s natural environment and location have shaped its role in agriculture, tourism, and scientific research.
What is an ISO Country Code?
ISO country codes come from the international standard ISO 3166 created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). These codes are used worldwide in databases, aviation systems, banking, shipping, and international data systems to uniquely identify countries and territories.ISO 3166-1 codes are the two-letter country codes such as US, FR, or JP. These are called Level-1 ISO codes.
Only ISO 3166-1 codes support flag emojis. Flag emojis are created by combining two Unicode regional indicator letters that match the country’s ISO two-letter code.
ISO 3166-2 codes represent states, provinces, or regions. Example: US-AZ = Arizona CA-ON = Ontario Subdivision codes do not have flag emojis.
