Jan Mayen
Formerly known as: Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen
Jan Mayen is a remote Norwegian island in the Arctic Ocean characterized by volcanic landscapes, glaciers, rugged coastlines, and the Beerenberg volcano.
📍 Jan Mayen is a remote volcanic island located in the Arctic Ocean, situated between Norway and Iceland. It is an unincorporated territory of Norway and has no permanent civilian population, being inhabited only by rotating personnel operating weather and research stations.
Jan Mayen’s geography is dominated by rugged volcanic terrain, covering about 377 square kilometers (146 square miles). The island is largely defined by Beerenberg, an active stratovolcano and the northernmost active volcano on Earth, which rises to over 2,200 meters (7,200 feet). Much of the island is covered by glaciers, with steep coastlines, lava fields, and limited vegetation adapted to harsh Arctic conditions. Its remote location, cold climate, and dramatic landscape have shaped its role as a site for scientific research, meteorological observation, and environmental monitoring.
