British Antarctic Territory
British Antarctic Territory
Also known as: BAT
The British Antarctic Territory is a British Overseas Territory in Antarctica characterized by vast ice sheets, towering glaciers, rugged mountain ranges, and polar coastal landscapes.
📍 British Antarctic Territory is a British Overseas Territory located in Antarctica, covering a sector of the continent south of the Atlantic Ocean and extending to the South Pole. It lies between areas claimed by Argentina and Chile, though all claims are subject to the terms of the Antarctic Treaty System, which sets aside territorial disputes and designates the region for peaceful and scientific purposes.
The British Antarctic Territory’s geography is defined by extreme polar conditions, with vast ice sheets, glaciers, and mountain ranges covering most of its area. The territory spans about 1.7 million square kilometers (660,000 square miles) and includes parts of the Antarctic Peninsula, ice shelves, and inland plateaus. The landscape is dominated by snow and ice, with very little exposed rock, and temperatures remain well below freezing for most of the year. There is no permanent population, but several research stations operate within the territory. Its harsh environment, remote location, and unique ecosystems have made it an important area for scientific research, climate study, and international cooperation.
