Svalbard
Svalbard
Formerly known as: Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen
Svalbard is a Norwegian archipelago in the Arctic Ocean characterized by glaciers, rugged mountains, fjords, and polar tundra landscapes.
📍 Svalbard is an Arctic archipelago located in the Arctic Ocean, north of mainland Norway and roughly midway between Norway and the North Pole. It consists of several large islands, including Spitsbergen, Nordaustlandet, and Edgeøya, with no land borders and surrounded by Arctic seas.
Svalbard’s geography is defined by a harsh polar environment dominated by glaciers, mountains, and fjords. The archipelago covers about 61,000 square kilometers (23,600 square miles), with around 60% of its land area covered by ice. Its terrain includes rugged peaks, ледяные поля, and deeply indented coastlines shaped by glacial activity. Vegetation is sparse, consisting mainly of tundra adapted to cold conditions. Despite its extreme latitude, parts of Svalbard are influenced by relatively milder ocean currents, allowing for limited human settlement. Its Arctic location and unique landscape have shaped its importance for scientific research, environmental monitoring, and polar exploration.
