📍 Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region of Tanzania located in the Indian Ocean, just off the eastern coast of mainland Tanzania. It consists mainly of the islands of Unguja (commonly called Zanzibar Island) and Pemba, along with several smaller islands, with no land borders and surrounded entirely by the Indian Ocean.
Zanzibar’s geography is characterized by low-lying coral islands with sandy beaches, shallow coastal waters, and inland areas of fertile soil. The region covers about 2,650 square kilometers (1,020 square miles) and features a tropical climate with lush vegetation, including spice plantations for which it is historically known. The coastline includes coral reefs and lagoons that support rich marine biodiversity. Its location along historic Indian Ocean trade routes has shaped its development as a center of commerce, culture, and tourism, while its natural environment continues to support agriculture, fishing, and maritime activity.
