South Ossetia is a partially recognized territory in the South Caucasus characterized by rugged mountainous terrain within the Greater Caucasus range and deep river valleys.

📍 South Ossetia is a partially recognized territory located in the South Caucasus, situated along the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains. It is internationally recognized as part of Georgia, but is administered as a de facto independent state with support from Russia. South Ossetia is landlocked and borders Russia to the north and the rest of Georgia to the south.
South Ossetia’s geography is defined by mountainous terrain, with steep valleys, rivers, and highland plateaus forming much of the landscape. The region covers about 3,900 square kilometers (1,500 square miles) and experiences a range of climates from cooler alpine conditions in the north to milder areas in lower elevations. Forests and alpine meadows are common, and much of the land is sparsely populated due to its rugged terrain. Its location in the Caucasus has shaped its strategic importance, settlement patterns, and ongoing geopolitical significance.
